Alimony is money paid from one spouse to another. In the old days it used to just be the male paying the females, but it doesn’t have to be that way anymore and the law allows, or requires that it be analyzed both ways.
Basically what the law allows in Mississippi is, the assets and the debts are taken together as a whole. Property is divided. Then if there is a deficit in either parties side of the ledger, so to speak, then alimony may be appropriate at that point in time.
It’s basically used to balance the equities and to make sure that the parties are able to exist separate and apart in the lifestyle that they have become accustomed to.
